Introduction
FORGETDIABETES proposes a radically new therapeutic paradigm resulting from the multidisciplinary combination of innovative technologies (algorithm, miniaturized hardware, smart sensors, experimental surgery). The resulting paradigm has the potential to revolutionize diabetes treatment and to stimulate the emergence of an EU innovation ecosystem.
FORGETDIABETES aims at achieving project objectives through the implementation of:
Ip hormone delivery system (OB1) solving issues such as:
- non-invasive hormone supply,
- miniaturization,
- long-term powering and
- biocompatibility to enable a safe and disappearing implant.
Ip glucose sensor (OB2) by developing a new and disruptive sensing technology, which will have to provide the following properties: long lifetime duration, precision errors < 5 %, bias < 5 %, inductive energy supply and ability for continuous glucose sensing.
Ip glucose control algorithm (OB3) a fully personalized adaptive strategy will be targeted.
Implantation surgical techniques (OB4) based upon experience of bariatric surgery and gastric feeding catheters; it appears that the most appropriate location of the device would be close to the anterior wall of the stomach.
Behavioural sciences will perform studies to address and identify human factors and ethical implications (OB5) (e.g. psychological, ethical, cognitive and social variables) in adopting this new technology.
FORGETDIABETES climax will be the overall BIP validation in pigs and the first-in-human study (OB6)
Gender analysis. As far as BIP is concerned, its design and realization is gender neutral. Gender issues have been taken in consideration in animal and patient selection for BIP validation.
